Wine tours in Cape Town and South Africa

Private wine tours and customised itineraries to explore the Cape  Winelands

Wine tours in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands are amongst the favourite activities for tourists coming to South Africa.

The Cape Winelands in the areas around Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek belong to the most impressive and beautiful of its kind in the world. Of course there is the wine: South Africa is the 8th biggest producer of wine in world - producing more than 10 million hectoliters a year. In 2021, the Wine Association of South Africa (WOSA) counted 536 producers and wine estates. WOSA also states that 90 512 hectares in South Africa are under vine.

Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Shiraz and Cabernet Saugvignon win regularly prizes at famous wine competitions around the world. At the decanter awards 2022 for instance a South African Chenin Blanc - Ken Forrester Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc 2021 - caused a stir, winning "Best in Show" with 97 points.

The other aspect that makes the Cape Winelands so special is the breathtaking landscape. There are various mountain ranges that can be seen from the wine estates in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl and beyond - their peaks reach up to more than 2000 meter.

94% of all wine estates in South Africa offer tasting facilities. This allow wine tour operators like Luhambo Tours to offer a big variety of customised wine tours either starting in Cape Town or in the Cape Winelands itself, i.e. in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek or Paarl.

The Stellenbosch and Franschhoek wine routes are the most famous and popular. But altogether, there are more than 20 wine routes in South Africa.

Multi-day wine tours become  popular

Many tourists who come to South Africa have only time to spend one day in the Cape Winelands. For them, a one day wine tour is perfect. The majority of our guests therefore opts for the Stellenbosch-Franschhoek Winelands Tour. On this tour, we do wine tastings at four different wine estates and stop for lunch at one of the many beautifully located vineyard restaurants. We gladly suggest wine estates or take your preferences or specific wine estates you'd like to visit into consideration.

For guests who are on a whistle stop in Cape Town and don't even have to time to go to Stellenbosch or Franschhoek should explore the option of combining a visit to the Cape of Good Hope/Cape Point and experiencing great South African wine in the Constantia Winelands, the wine route closest to the Mother City. This tour offers the most important Cape Town highlights all wrapped in one day.

Returning guests often want to explore some of the other wine regions, for instance the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley outside Hermanus or the Swartland region in the north of Cape Town. We will always take the time to discuss with you what the various options for a private, customised wine tour are, what wine estates can be visited and what other places there are to be explored.

As South Africa as a tourist destination and South African wine become more and more popular, we receive an increased number of enquiries from customers who would like to go onto a multi-day wine tour. We offer a 3 Day Winelands Tour that allows you to learn the most important things about South African wine. The package even includes accommodation. But it doesn't end there: Of course we can customise any multi-day wine tour to your requirements - the amount of wine estates we visit, the wine regions and routes we travel to and whether accommodation or other activities should be included or not.

Please get in touch if you'd like to find out how you can best spend your time in the South African Winelands.
