Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a private wine tour usually last?
Our private wine tours are full day experiences which are typically around 8 hours. But we’re completely flexible.
Can we choose the wineries we visit?
Absolutely, and that’s one of the biggest perks of booking a private tour. Whether you already have a few favourite estates in mind or want us to recommend some of our best choices, we’ll tailor the itinerary around your wine preferences, interests and pace. We know all the best kept secrets across Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and beyond.
Do we need to be wine experts to enjoy the tour?
Not at all. Most of our guests simply love good wine, beautiful scenery and great company. Our guides will happily share insights about winemaking, the history of the region and even a few fun facts along the way, no pretentious wine talk required (unless you want it!).
Is lunch included in the private wine tour?
Lunch isn’t automatically included in the private tour price, but we’ll gladly make a reservation for you at one of our favourite local restaurants or wine estate bistros. Otherwise, we’ll stop at one of the beautifully located vineyard restaurants. However, lunch is always at own expense.
Can you arrange dinner in Franschhoek or Stellenbosch?
Yes! Many of our guests love ending their day with a gourmet dinner in Franschhoek or Stellenbosch as both are home to some of South Africa’s best restaurants. We’ll handle the reservations and transport and your guide will drive you safely back to Cape Town after dinner.
Are private tours suitable for non-drinkers or mixed groups?
Definitely and many of our guests travel with friends or partners who don’t drink wine, and there’s still plenty to enjoy such as the stunning scenery, delicious food, local art and beautiful architecture. Non-drinkers can still take part in the cellar tours and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the wine estates.
Can we buy wine during the tour?
Absolutely and in fact, we encourage it! Many of the estates we visit offer exclusive wines you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re interested in shipping your purchases home, several estates provide international delivery options, and we can assist you with the arrangements.
Do you offer tours outside Stellenbosch and Franschhoek?
While Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are our most popular regions, we also offer private tours to lesser known wine areas such as the Swartland, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and Elgin amongst others. If you’ve heard of a region you’d love to explore, just mention it and we’ll make it happen.
For guests who’d like to experience more of the Winelands in depth, our 3 Day Wine Tour is the perfect option, offering a relaxed and immersive journey through several of the Cape’s most beautiful wine regions.
How far in advance should we book?
We recommend booking as early as possible, especially during peak season (which is November to March), when popular estates and restaurants fill up quickly. That said, we’ll always do our best to accommodate last minute requests as we’re flexible like that.
What makes a Luhambo private wine tour different?
We believe the difference lies in the personal touch. Firstly, at Luhambo Tours, only experienced, specialised wine guides run tours. Further more, our tours aren’t scripted or rushed instead they’re relaxed, flexible and designed entirely around you. We know the winemakers, the secret spots and the stories behind the vines. It’s more like spending the day with a knowledgeable local friend than a formal tour.
