Private 3 Day South African Wine Tour

Join us on an unforgettable journey through the Cape Winelands, where you’ll experience the finest South African wines and gourmet delights. Starting from Cape Town or the Cape Winelands, this private three-day tour promises a fun-filled, personalised experience with a wide variety of South African wines, from Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc to Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and the iconic Pinotage. While we suggest an itinerary, we offer flexibility to cater to your specific wine preferences.

An Example Itinerary

Day 1 – Stellenbosch & Franschhoek

Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your Cape Town or Cape Winelands accommodation. Our first stop is Simonsig in the Stellenbosch wine region, renowned for its sparkling Méthode Cap Classique (MCC), setting the perfect tone for the day.

Next we visit Kanonkop, famous for its amazing Pinotage and other exceptional reds. Continuing towards Franschhoek, you’ll have the option to enjoy tastings at Vrede and Lust, Avondale or the beautiful Boschendal Estate before heading to lunch. Popular lunch spots include Lust Bistro & Bakery, Delheim, and The Stoep at Laborie.

In the afternoon, you’ll explore the Franschhoek wine region with stops at La Motte, Stoney Brook, or Grand Provence for additional tastings. As the day winds down, you’ll check into your accommodation in Franschhoek. The evening is yours to relax by the pool or wander through this charming town, known as the gourmet capital of South Africa. For dinner, indulge at one of Franschhoek’s acclaimed restaurants, such as Le Bon Vivant, La Petite Colombe, Le Coin Francais, or Protégé.

Optional stops along the way include Fairview for award winning wines and cheeses or KWV for a brandy and Belgian chocolate pairing, both located in the Paarl wine region.

Day 2 – A Day of Indulgence

Start your day with a leisurely breakfast before visiting the Huguenot Museum and Rose Garden in Franschhoek. If you’re in the mood for some pampering, treat yourself to a spa session at the luxurious Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa.

Your first wine tasting of the day will be at Rainbow’s End, a boutique estate nestled in the Stellenbosch region, known for its stunning views and exquisite wines. Next, head to the renowned Thelema Wine Estate, where you can sample a wide range of both red and white wines.

For lunch, relax at the Postcard Café at Stark-Conde Wine Estate, a hidden gem surrounded by breathtaking scenery. On your return to Franschhoek, enjoy a final tasting at Marianne or Glen Carlou before another delightful dinner in town. The culinary options in Franschhoek are endless, so the choice is yours!

Day 3 – The Wine Capital of South Africa

After a relaxed breakfast, we head back to Stellenbosch, starting the day with a visit to the prestigious Delaire Graff Estate, where you’ll be greeted with spectacular views over the valley and some of the best wines South Africa has to offer.

A stroll along Dorp Street in Stellenbosch is a must, where you can admire the historical Cape Dutch architecture and experience the lively atmosphere. Don’t miss Oom Samie se Winkel, a charming old trading post that’s perfect for a glimpse into local history.

Next, enjoy a decadent chocolate and wine pairing at the elegant Waterford Wine Estate. For lunch, you can choose between Guardian Peak, Salt at Waterford, Mont Marie or the renowned Rust en Vrede Estate, both offering exceptional food and wine.

As your tour comes to a close, we’ll make one last stop at either Ken Forrester or Meerlust Estate, home to the iconic Rubicon blend. This will be the perfect way to cap off your 3 day wine tour before we return you to your accommodation, leaving you with memories of South Africa’s finest wines and breathtaking landscapes.

Please note: This is a sample itinerary, and we reserve the right to change accommodation venues as needed. Also, our tours do not operate between 24 December and 2 January.

Frequently Asked  Questions

Can we extend the tour beyond 3 days?

Yes, of course you can! Some of our guests choose to turn their 3 day adventure into a longer getaway by adding extra nights or additional wine regions, such as the Elgin Valley, Robertson or the Swartland. Just let us know what you have in mind, and we’ll put together an extended itinerary that fits your schedule and interests.

What makes this tour different from a regular day tour?

The biggest difference is the depth of the experience. A multi-day tour allows you to slow down, explore more wine estates and really get a feel for each region. You'll have time to enjoy long lunches, evening dinners in Franschhoek, visit a gallery or museum, enjoy a spa treatment and the chance to relax without feeling rushed. It’s immersive, personal and offers a true taste of life in the Cape Winelands.

Do we have free time to explore on our own?

Yes, definitely. Although each day is thoughtfully planned, and we can build in plenty of downtime based on your preferences. You might choose to wander through Franschhoek’s main street, pop into art galleries, enjoy a leisurely coffee, or simply unwind by the pool at your guesthouse. We believe part of the joy of travelling is having time to soak up the atmosphere at your own pace.

Can we request specific wine estates or experiences during the tour?

Of course. While the 3 day itinerary has been designed to include a fantastic mix of wine styles and scenic stops, we’re more than happy to tailor it to your preferences. If there’s a particular estate or experience you’d like, we’ll do our best to include it. This tour is all about creating a personal experience, not following a rigid schedule.

Is this tour suitable for couples or honeymooners?

Absolutely! And in fact, our 3 day wine tour is one of the most popular choices for honeymooners and couples looking for something truly special. The combination of luxurious accommodation, stunning scenery, intimate wine tastings and gourmet dining makes it a wonderfully romantic experience. If you’re celebrating something special, simply let us know and we can help arrange little touches like a bottle of bubbly on arrival, a private dinner, or a spa treatment in Franschhoek.

Can this tour be arranged for small groups or families?

Yes, and we regularly host small groups of friends, family members or even corporate teams. Whether it’s a group of four or ten, we can tailor the itinerary and vehicle size accordingly. We’ll make sure everyone’s interests are catered for even if not everyone drinks wine.

Can we include other experiences like hiking, markets or sightseeing?

Of course! The beauty of a 3 day format is that there’s room to include more than just wine. If you’d like to add a morning hike, a stop at a local farmers’ market or a scenic drive through Franschhoek Pass, we can make it happen. Our guides know the area inside out and are happy to blend wine, food, and sightseeing into one perfectly balanced itinerary.

How far in advance should we book the 3 day tour?

We recommend booking at least 3 months in advance, especially during peak travel months (which is October through March). This ensures the best availability for accommodation and restaurant reservations. Winter bookings are generally more flexible and can often be arranged at shorter notice. Although, if you're booking last minute, don't hesitate to reach out and we'll always do our best to make it happen.

Do you operate tours during the Christmas and New Year period?

Our tours do not operate between 24 December and 2 January due to logistical reasons. Many wineries, restaurants and accommodations have limited availability or are closed during this festive period. We resume our regular tour schedule from 3 January onwards. If you're planning to visit the Winelands during the holiday season, please get in touch and we'll be happy to discuss alternative dates that work best for you.

Tailor Your Perfect Wine Experience

At the heart of this tour is flexibility, and that is because we want your wine adventure to be as unique as you are. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion, exploring the Winelands with loved ones, or simply indulging in your passion for fine wines, we’ll gladly customise the itinerary to suit your preferences. From specific vineyard visits to restaurant recommendations, we’re happy to accommodate your requests and ensure a personalised and memorable journey.

So, allow us to craft the perfect South African wine tour for you. Simply share your preferences, and we’ll handle the rest. Whether that means exploring intimate boutique estates, enjoying a picnic in the vineyards or dining at one of the region’s top restaurants.
