Frequently Asked Questions
How much time do we spend at each wine estate?
We typically spend between 45 minutes to just over an hour at each estate. This gives you enough time to enjoy the tasting without feeling like you’re being hurried from place to place. Some estates may offer additional experiences such as cellar tours, depending on the day and availability.
What is the driving time like between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek?
The drive between regions is part of the experience rather than just a transfer. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are close enough that travel time is short, but the route is incredibly scenic, passing through mountain passes, vineyards and historic farming areas. We often share local insights and stories during these drives to bring the landscape to life.
Can the tour be adjusted for different wine preferences?
Yes, within reason. If you have a particular interest in red wines, MCC, boutique producers or scenic estates, let us know in advance and we’ll do our best to shape the day around that. While we keep the overall structure of the tour, we’re very flexible when it comes to estate selection.
How does this tour compare to doing Stellenbosch or Franschhoek on my own?
While it’s possible to visit the Winelands independently, this tour removes all the guesswork. We carefully plan the route, timing and estate selection so you avoid backtracking, overcrowded tasting rooms and rushed stops. You also benefit from insider context such as why certain estates matter, what makes specific wines unique, and how the regions differ, which is something you don’t get when driving yourself.
Are the wine tastings seated?
Most tastings are seated, either at a tasting table, terrace or inside the cellar tasting room, depending on the estate. Seated tastings create a far more relaxed and immersive experience, allowing you to take your time with each wine and engage properly with the staff or guide.
What happens if an estate is particularly busy on the day?
We monitor timing carefully and adjust the flow of the day as needed. If an estate is unusually busy, we may slightly shift the order of tastings or substitute with an equally high-quality alternative nearby to keep the experience smooth and enjoyable. Our focus is always on maintaining the quality of the tour rather than sticking rigidly to one location.
Will we learn about the differences in terroir between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek?
Yes, and this is something wine enthusiasts really enjoy on this tour. Stellenbosch is known for its diverse soils and warmer climate, which produce structured, age-worthy reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage. Franschhoek, on the other hand, benefits from cooler mountain influences and excels with elegant styles, white wines and champagne style wine. Throughout the day, we point out how the altitude, soil composition and climate shape what’s in your glass, so you’re not just tasting wine, you’re understanding why it tastes the way it does.
