The flagship wine is the Magna Carta, a barrel-fermented blend of Sauvignon Blanc considered Steenberg's icon wine. On the red side, the Catharina, named after the estate's founder is a Merlot led Bordeaux style blend incorporating Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, aged in predominantly new French oak. It sits as Steenberg's flagship red, pairing well with richer dishes on the estate's restaurant menus.
Sauvignon Blanc of course remains central to the estate's identity beyond the Magna Carta, with single varietal bottlings such as the Rattlesnake and The Black Swan showcasing different expressions of the grape. From taut and mineral to riper and more textured.
Across the portfolio, the wines lean toward precision and restraint rather than power. It’s also a reflection of Constantia's cooler growing conditions, sea-facing slopes and granite soils, which slow ripening and preserve acidity even in a warm South African summer.
Steenberg is also one of the region's leading producers of Méthode Cap Classique, South Africa's traditional method sparkling wine, released under the estate's heritage 1682 label, a nod to its founding year. The range includes a Chardonnay based Blanc de Blancs and a Pinot Noir bottling, both made using the same slow, lees-aged process as Champagne.
Tastings take place in a relaxed, inside/outside setting overlooking the vineyards, with knowledgeable tasting room ambassadors guiding guests through the estate's wines and the cool climate terroir behind them. The offerings range of tasting formats depending on what you're in the mood for. Tasting sessions typically run for around 90 minutes and with several formats to choose from, it helps to know in advance which experience suits the day. For a more considered sit-down meal, the Tryn offers a refined, contemporary menu built around fresh, local ingredients, in a space that nods to the estate's founder, Catharina Ras, known affectionately as "Tryn."
Beyond the tasting room and restaurants, it’s also home to a five star hotel, spa and an 18 hole championship golf course, making it one of the more complete estate experiences in the Cape Winelands for guests who want to make a longer stop of it.
Steenberg's location makes it an easy and rewarding addition to a Cape Peninsula day, particularly alongside Cape Point and Constantia's other historic estates, without requiring a full trip out to Stellenbosch and/or Franschhoek, although that can be arranged if you want to experience the very best of the region.
